Should I give a two-week notice?

I have found another job and my new employer said I could start whenever I feel comfortable with a 3-week period.  I’m not sure whether to give my old employer a two week notice or just leave and take a week off before starting my new job.  I have worked at the old job 4 years and my boss was ok (not the best).  Employer loyalty is not what it used to be.  Nowadays, employers will fire their employees without notice and try all they can to avoid paying a severance.
